A Javanese musical performance of the Indonesian folklore stories
As part of the 2023 Indonesian Year of Culture, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa invited director Rama Soeprapto, and his theatre company to develop a musical telling the Indonesian folklore stories, featuring traditional Indonesian crafts, musical instruments, masks and dance.
The Panji and Sekartaji stories are part of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage and folklore. These stories originated from Java island and its known not only in Indonesia but across south east Asia. Based on the history , the story has the background coming from the East Javanese courts of the Kediri and Janggala Kingdoms during the 12th century and were later adapted and transformed in other parts of Indonesia. These stories were traditionally performed as wayang (shadow puppet) plays, which were accompanied by traditional Javanese gamelan music. Today, they continue to be an important part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, with various adaptations and interpretations across the country.
